Third Generation of Computer

The Third Generation of Computer: What It Is and What It Means For You

Posted on November 15, 2022November 15, 2022 by nDir

The third generation of computers emerged due to the introduction of integrated circuit design (IC). It was one of the first desktop generations to imitate current computer processes. Computers used to take up a whole area or house until the 2nd gen, but their size drastically decreased after the invention of electronic components. The IBM 360 and DEC PDP were two of these generations’ most famous computers.

In 1965, third-generation computers were released. The third wave used microchips, commonly referred to as computer chips or electronic components. This led to the introduction of quicker, more compact, and far less expensive computers that supported multitasking. As the computer became more accessible, the number of tech and computer professionals increased, which fueled the advancement of computer equipment & coding. High-level programs like C, FORTRAN, or Pascal were being used and gaining popularity. Magnetic storage was also a feature of these systems.

Third-Generation Computer Features

Many additional features were implemented, and the third generation of computers was created. The following are just some of the characteristics of computers from this generation:

  • Computer Chips act as the main electrical components of this generation of technology. In the 2nd gen, semiconductors miniatured and printed on ICs were utilized. In the first computers, inanimate objects were swapped out for transistors. The silicone wafers were covered with tiny transistors, dramatically increasing performance and efficiency. The first commercial system was created by IBM and was built on IC, which marked the beginning of the third generation of computers.
  • These computers utilized massive electromagnets, magnet discs, or tape storage.
  • Programs with high abstraction levels were utilized, including PASCAL, FORTRAN, BASIC, C, and COBOL.
  • Compared to the second generation of computers, they were more affordable, compact, and effective.
  • Tape drives, printers, monitors, keyboards, and other devices for input and output were used.
  • It operates using the disk drive, accelerating the machine’s speed.
  • The computers were straightforward to install because of their compact size.
  • Relative to the earlier generation of computers, the amount of power and heat produced.
  • The lack of heat output made the air conditioning system unnecessary.
  • Both multitask and accommodating a wide range are possibilities.
  • Very Wide Scale Integrated and Extremely Big Scale Integrated processors were employed for the compact package.
  • Physical keyboards replaced punch cards.
  • Integrated circuits have taken the place of independent channels.
  • This generation of computers had large storage space.
  • They also went by the name “mini-computers” because of their smaller size.
  • These include the IBM 360, PDP 11, UNIVAC 1108, and others.

The Third Generation of Windows Operating Systems

The third generation of computers employed a few different kinds of operating systems.

1 Remote processing, first running program

Both client/server versions of this file system are functional. The commands to be executed are transferred from one of the two or more computers into the other, with mighty computational power. After processing is complete, the other device transmits the outcome to the primary computer.

2 Time-sharing software, version

This operating system enables numerous users to utilize the CPU at once. This made it possible for a few people to use multiple terminals on a single mainframe simultaneously. It seeks to speed up the response.

1 An instantaneous windows vista

This system software cuts down on time needed to process inputs and generate results. The amount of time required is relatively less with just this operating system.

Coding Languages Utilized By Computers Of the Third Generation

The third generation utilized programming languages like COBOL, PASCAL, BASIC, FORTRAN, ALGOL-68, etc…

Formula translator for FORTRAN

This programming language was among the first high-level languages to be utilized. At IBM, John Backus created this language. FORTRAN 77 and FORTRAN IV are this language’s most widely used variants.

Computational language, or ALGOL

Alan Perlis created the language. The Hardened Concrete was first presented. It is software composed of autonomous chunks that include both instructions and data.

Conclusion

You learned about the characteristics of third-generation computers as a result of this article’s reading. The following generation of computers was designed with these features. The third generation of computers made numerous contributions to the advancement and advancement of computers.
