Smartphones are ubiquitous and have become an important part of our lives. However, little is known about how people use their smartphones. This post presents data on smartphone use from the Nielsen National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG).

First, we looked at how often people used their smartphones in the past week. The most commonly reported time was during the morning or evening when people were getting ready for work or school. About one-in-four (24%) respondents used their smartphone during these times.

The next most common time was when people were out and about (19%), followed by when they were at home (15%). About a third (32%) used their smartphone some other time during the past week.
The most commonly reported reason for using a smartphone was to access the internet (44%), followed by to access applications (27%). Only 6% of respondents said they used their smartphone to text someone.

Next, we asked how often people use their smartphones for specific activities. The chart below shows the percentage of people who use their smartphones for each activity in the past week.
