Dual-SIM phones are now popular, but do you really need them? Do you need even two SIM cards?
Dual-SIM phones come with a variety of benefits, making them a must-have for most people. However, not everyone understands what dual SIM means or how dual SIM phones work.
We are here to explain everything you need to know about dual SIM phones, their benefits, and how SIMS fit into this picture.
What is a Dual SIM Phone?
Two SIM phones support the installation and use of two SIM cards in one device. This differs from a single SIM device, with only one SIM card slot. Of course, you will need an unlocked phone to use the dual SIM feature if supported. And that is one of the top reasons to buy an open phone.
Most dual SIM phones have dual SIM functionality. The dual SIM phone can support two active SIMs simultaneously, without requiring you to remove and change SIMs to change the phone number.
This means you can get calls and texts from both lines. You can also adjust which SIM card is your main data or voice call card. The other two SIM phones support even the ability to hold one conversation with two callers in two separate lines.
Meanwhile, another type of dual SIM phone is a standby dual SIM device. Two pending SIM devices require you to switch between SIMs in your device settings to unlock them. Your phone connects to only one network at a time, so you may not receive all your texts or calls at once.
There are also dual SIM smartphones that support the addition of a dual SIM or microSD card — not both. This is a limited edition dual SIM feature on older smartphones which means you have to choose between a second SIM or more storage.
What is eSIM?
The most recent type of dual SIM phone is the one that supports eSIM. ESIM, or embedded SIM, is a built-in microchip that acts as an electronic SIM card (rather than portable). As it enables remote SIM provisioning, eSIM does not need to be replaced when changing carriers. Instead, these embedded SIM applications use software to upload profiles and mobile applications to your mobile operator.
Although eSIM cannot completely replace the portable SIM card in the phone, it can also be used on two SIM devices. For example, the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR smartphones include dual SIM nano-SIM and eSIM SIM settings.
However, due to the constant acceptance of eSIM technology by mobile manufacturers and carriers this setup has not yet spread yet. Most dual SIM devices still use dual portable SIM cards. It is possible that many dual SIM devices including eSIM will appear in the future as technology spreads.
