One question almost everyone asks about hair replacement systems is whether you can sleep with them attached to your head. While it’s not recommended with wigs, it can certainly be done with both wigs as well as men’s toupees.
However, there are some things to keep in mind so you protect the hair from your hair system and keep it lasting as long as possible.
You may be wondering why it’s important to be cautious or wary about sleeping with a hair system. After all, if you’re wearing a human hair system, is there any need if it’s just like regular hair? Well, one thing to keep in mind is that friction and movement during your sleep can adversely affect anyone’s hair.
When you’re tossing and turning during the night, this can result in tangling, breakage and hair shedding with your hair system. The shorter your hair, the less likely this will be a problem. But if you are wearing a women’s wig or a full cap wig for men or even a toupee with plenty of hair density, this can present some problems.
There are some things you can do to minimize the damage if you absolutely must sleep with a hair system attached. One of them is selecting the right material for your pillowcase. We recommend using satin or silk pillowcases that not only do not absorb moisture, but also do not pull on your hair when making friction.
Materials to avoid include traditional cotton and flannel pillowcases as your hair is more susceptible to getting dried or tangled.
Hair system wearers with long hair need to be most careful about sleeping with their hair pieces on, which is why in general, it’s not recommended for women to sleep with their wigs on. With that said, you can spray on some leave-in conditioner before bed to help prevent tangling while you’re sleeping.
For added protection, you can also braid your wear or style it with a side ponytail. This is notable for those who have curly hair while another option is to use a scrunchie to make a top ponytail. This helps you avoid crushing or frizzing your curls during bed.
Alternatively, you can also sleep wearing a silk or satin head scarf or bonnet. This can double in benefits as it lets you keep the same hairstyle when you wake up, especially with a secure bonnet.
