There are a lot of triathlon training plans you can find online, and you can either choose the best one that meets your needs or you can use them to create your personal plan. A personal plan is always better as it suits your fitness, goals and life better. When creating a training plan there are a few things to keep in mind which are outlined below.

Know your priorities

It is important to know how much time you want to devote to the training and what else are you juggling, family, work, studies? If there are others in your home sit down with them and discuss your triathlon training plan looking at what time you can commit to training without being an absent parent/partner! Having a coach can come in useful here, with their experience they can help you determine where you need to focus and how to best allocate the time you can commit.

Have clear goals

It really helps to have a goal or several goals so that you can ensure your triathlon training plan best help you meet them. It might be a life goal, a fitness goal, a race goal. How is completing the triathlon going to impact your life, why are you doing this, what are the best outcomes? If you do not have a coach consider having a training partner or talk to someone with experience in triathlons. You could even talk about it with your partner. You need someone able to be objective to help you be the same way.

Decide on race distance and test your strength

When you have got your priorities sorted and your goals are clear you need to think about what kind of triathlon you are going to run in. If you are completely new to training and triathlons the sprint ones are best, they are shorter. When you know what race distance you want to complete you need to think about your fitness and strength levels and what you need to do to improve them. What are your current limits? Where are you stronger and what needs more focus? For example, often triathletes are weaker in swimming compared to the other two sports.

Create a plan

With the above decisions made and considered you can better come up with a triathlon training plan that will then be effective at making you a better triathlete. As a beginner you don’t need to worry as much about times, just complete the race injury-free and healthy! If you enjoyed it you can then start looking at beating times, where things went well and where things got hard to inform your next training plan and race.

Conclusion

When looking for or creating a training plan for a triathlon try to get some expert help if you can. You do not have to invest in months of coaching, but even a small amount of input from someone like that can make a lot of difference to whether you complete the goals, and how well your training goes.
