Giving Zakat Defines by Qur’an and Sunnah

There are some pious Muslims who do not give zakat. They calculate zakat themselves before giving it to the poor ones. But they also know that this is wrong and sinful.

Allah commands us in the Quran: ‘And woe to those who pray but are unmindful of their prayer.’ (107:4-5)

Fulfilling our obligatory duties is necessary for attaining success(in this life and the hereafter). Calculating zakat does not fulfill one’s zakat obligation. The

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The zakat of a wealthy person is nothing but good deeds.” (Tirmidhi)

And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever owes zakat to pay it when they are able.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

If zakat is not paid when one can, then zakat has not been fulfilled. So zakat should be given correctly without any delay or interest in mind. The poor ones will get their right while the zakat giver will be rewarded for fulfilling his obligation on time. And it also saves one from sinning by doing calculations themself.

Two ways of zakat calculation

  1. The zakat payer calculates zakat themself and then give it in charity. The zakat giver should check the zakat amount themself and distribute it according to its due share. He will make a mistake, thus committing sin. Allah says: ‘And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly, except that there be trading by your mutual consent.’ (4:29)

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever has gathered gold or silver (i.e., money), let them go to where it is sold to find out whether they were pure or impure. If they were pure, they should spend it; if not, then they should leave it.” (Bukhari)

  1. The zakat payer gives zakat without checking the zakat amount themself. Handing over zakat to poor ones is enough to fulfill one’s zakat obligation. Nothing else needs to be done here except that the giver of zakat remembers Allah and distributes zakat according to its due share. And of course, he will be rewarded for fulfilling his obligation on time by giving zakat at the right time even though he didn’t make the calculations themself.

Zakat should be given without any delay or interest in mind. The poor ones will get their right while the zakat giver will be rewarded for fulfilling his obligation on time. And it also saves one from sinning by doing calculations themself. So, it is better to give zakat according to its due share and donate it instead. This makes our deed more straightforward.
